If you’re wondering who Wim Hof is, then where have you been? Wim Hof is an extreme athlete from the Netherlands. Interviewed by everyone from Joe Rogan to Gwyneth Paltrow, he is best known for his ability to withstand freezing temperatures. So who better to ask for advice when it comes to facing Arctic Enema? One of our most famous, and formidable obstacles which involves sliding into a skip full to the brim with water and ice.
When we say Wim Hof can withstand the cold, we’re not talking about waiting-for-the-bus-without-a-jacket-in-November cold. We’re talking running a half marathon barefoot on ice and snow, setting a world record for the furthest swim under ice and climbing 23,600ft up Mount Everest in nothing but shorts and shoes. So how does he do it? And how can you channel the Iceman when you face your own foray into freezing temperatures?
What is the Wim Hof Method?
Wim Hof puts his incredible feats and physical achievements down to the Wim Hof Method. The Wim Hof Method is a combination of three pillars; cold therapy, breathing and meditation and when combined Wim Hof believes that they’ve not only allowed him to break records but improved his general wellbeing, impacting everything from energy levels to improving his immune system and sleep quality. So a dip in Arctic Enema could be beneficial to your health – you can thank us later.
5 Tips on How to Use the Wim Hof Method to Survive Arctic Enema
Decide that this is what you want to do, and decide it fully. That goes for Tough Mudder, the Wim Hof Method AND Arctic Enema. We’ve seen plenty of Mudders sit atop the Arctic Enema tube and panic. Don’t overthink it. Climb the stairs, sit down and when you get the signal slide into the water. If you stop, if you’re not prepared to commit, you’ll back out.
When it comes to the Wim Hof Method you need to know what you’re doing. Visit the Wim Hof YouTube channel; try the free MiniClass; scroll through the Wim Hof Method Facebook page; read the comprehensive e-book about the science behind the breathing and cold. Dive into it— this is a fun, interesting and ongoing journey.
2. Start with a Single Step
You may want to start with just a breathing session every other day. Or a cold shower twice a week. As long as you stay committed, you can take your time. The method is not a means to an end— it’s building new healthy habits.
Consider signing up to Tough Mudder as your first step to taking on Arctic Enema. Then, on event day, we suggest not looking up where Arctic Enema is on the map and simply taking each muddy step and each obstacle as it comes.
3. Create Time and Space
This is especially important once you have decided to practice the Wim Hof Method on a daily basis. See if you can find a quiet space in the morning to do the breathing. Communicate to the people around you how important it is for you to have your own space to breathe (literally). Wake up 20 minutes earlier and create that space. You deserve it.
4. Be Ready for the Ride
Wim Hof says it many times: the method is simple, but it isn’t necessarily easy. After a couple of weeks you might start to feel different; your dreams could be more intense and you might not feel your best. This is completely normal and if this is the case, the method is actually working. During this time, you will need to be patient with your mind and body. They are healing, so just observe; know that this is part of the process, and keep going. It will get easier.
We can say the same for Arctic Enema. It might be scary, it might not be very enjoyable once you’re in there (okay that’s a bit of an understatement) but nothing quite beats the rush once you’re out the other side.
5. Make it Fun
Last but definitely not least: enjoy the ride. Sing silly songs to endure those first cold showers; share your goals and small victories on the Facebook page; listen to beautiful music during breathing exercises. For Wim, working with Tough Mudder and inspiring others is a fun part of the method. You could get your whole team to try the Method, so that you can encourage each other, keep everyone accountable and ensure there are plenty of laughs.
Think of ways you can incorporate fun and laughter into the Method. After all: Wim wants you to be strong, happy and healthy and most of all, survive Arctic Enema.
