The classic Tough Mudder obstacle Kiss of Mud is where we get down and dirty. These are your five Kiss of Mud tips that will help you and your team get through the mud and avoid the barbed wire.
Five Top Tips to Get Through Kiss of Mud
1. Bums down
This is the big one. With only 18″ of space between the ground and rows of barbed wire you’re going to need to keep your entire body as close to the mud as possible (hence the name).
You may find yourself with a pain in the arse, if you allow your bum to float.
2. Army crawl
Probably the most popular technique for tackling Kiss of Mud. Although it means taking the brunt of the uneven, muddy ground on your forearms it also means you can see directly ahead of you, shimmy alongside your teammates and look fairly cool in photos.
In comparison to the second technique which is a little less dignified…
3. Sausage roll
Exactly what it sounds like. Some Mudders choose to lay across the length of Kiss of Mud and roll themselves, like a sausage to the end. It means there isn’t so much pressure on your arms and your bum stays down but you do have a lot less control and the chance of crashing into other Mudders is high.
4. Keep a strong core
To keep low and in control you’ll need to engage your core and keep it strong until the end. Check out our training page, where you’ll find a workout video specifically aimed at targeting your core.

5. Decent Trousers
Or shorts. Or at least a large pair of pants. Anything really, as long as it protects your dignity if you do happen to get snared in the barbed wire. Many a Mudder has completed the course baring a little more than they planned after a run in with Kiss of Mud.
