How to Level Up Your Training

This season we've been making you the master of your own destiny and giving you the chance to choose your challenge with Lucozade Sport Level Up Lanes.

If you're planning on pushing yourself to the limit and taking on the most difficult iteration available then it's wise to up the ante when it comes to training. We've asked Tough Mudder UK Trainer and Lucozade Sport Coach Born Barikor for his top tips for levelling up your workout.

BOOST YOUR TRAINING FOR LEVEL UP LANES

1. THINGS ARE ABOUT TO GET EXPLOSIVE

To really turn the heat up on your workout transform basic moves into explosive motion. For example a squat can become a squat jump and a burpee becomes a burpee with a tuck jump.

These explosive moves will increase your power output, making you faster and making tackling those extra-tricky challenges feel a little easier.

2. UP THE INTENSITY

So you want to play harder? Then you have to work harder.

There's a couple of ways to increase the intensity of your workout, if you're using weights then increase the load, not to so much that you're can't pick it up but heavy enough that you're really pushing yourself.

Already lifting heavy? Then it's time to up your number of reps and this goes for bodyweight exercises and sprinting too - if you usually do three sets increase this to four every now and then.

3. NO REST FOR THE WICKED

It doesn't matter if you live for the gym or you're a die hard runner, everyone needs a little recovery time. By cutting your recovery times down you're forcing your body to adapt and respond at a faster rate.

If you're really serious about upping your game why not try some supersets as well? Supersetting is a form of strength training which asks you to cut out that break all together. We know it sounds scary but if you work two opposing muscle groups (upper body and then lower body for example) you'll find it's a lot more achievable than you first thought. Supersets are a great way to improve your stamina as well as strength and you get an extra long recovery at the end.

4. CHOOSE YOUR CHALLENGE

Everybody's best looks different. So whether you're planning on trying the most difficult Lucozade Sport Level Up Lane on every obstacle or if you're getting out into the mud for the very first time, there is an obstacle variation for you (as well as training guides and tips from Born to get you ready).
