In September 2024, Naomi laced up for the 15K Birmingham Tough Mudder, taking on every mile, mud pit and electric shock in memory of her dad, Alan.
Alan died of young-onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, just days before his 68th birthday. Naomi was only 19 when he was diagnosed, and the impact was huge.
“I couldn’t fully face the reality of losing him,” she said. “It was overwhelming watching the man I admired so much fade away before my eyes.”
Built On His Strength

Alan was a man of grit, confidence and a constant drive to improve – all qualities that now drive Naomi, both in life and in the mud.
“Tough Mudder isn’t just about testing what your body can do – it’s about mental resilience too,” she said. “My dad inspired me to face challenges head-on, learn from setbacks, and celebrate the small wins along the way.”
Digging Deep in the Mud

Naomi described the event as brutal – cold swims, electric shocks, fear-conquering obstacles – but also completely worth it.
“I had the chance to push myself while supporting a cause that truly matters,” she said. “His steady belief in me kept me going on the course – and it keeps me going through life too.”

What Causes Dementia?
Alzheimer’s Research UK: Most dementia cases result from a complex mixture of factors.
Age and genetics are the biggest risk factors, but research suggests almost half of dementia cases are linked to risk factors we can control.

Why She Runs for a Cure

Naomi chose to support Alzheimer’s Research UK – a cause that hits close to home.
“Finding a cure for dementia would mean everything to me. No one should have to go through that kind of pain. A cure would change everything – for my family, and for so many others.”
Mud, Meaning and Momentum
The energy on the day, the backing from Alzheimer’s Research UK, and the sense of purpose all left a mark.
“I’m always up for a challenge,” Naomi said. “And I’d do it all again.”
